Why Gulu University’s Ranking Slipped: was it information technology(IT) or the evils of measurement?

Gulu university faculty of Medicine

Measurement, which is a key aspect of living has not only brought about healthy competition, but in most cases conflict. Measurement has brought conflict because it implies comparision. Comparision between the ugly and beautiful; between black and white, between man and women, between the dull and the clever; between the rich and the poor.

It is therefore, not suprising that measurement has also been applied to the education system of the world. In this connection, the recent reaction by the vice chancelor of Gulu University that his University has slipped in world ranking points to the issues connected with measurement. So what is the explanaton for this? Is it information technology or the evils of measurement?

From Overwhelmed to Hopeful

JK says that ” wisdom is the neding of suffering”. Therefore, it seems wisdom is more powerful than suffering. It is even more powerful than hope.

It filled me with hope. I realised that I can’t help everyone but that, given small opportunities, often people can help themselves. With a small amount of resources and some basic training these women have managed to improve child mortality for their own community. It’s a beautiful thing and something that fills…

Confusion as both government and rebels welcome same group of ‘defectors’

Confusion as both government and rebels welcome same group of ‘defectors’

Do not be late than never. Otherwise, the train will leave you behind.

Saakam!

In the scramble to choose sides, new defectors find themselves in a circles of the same difference In the scramble to choose sides, new defectors find themselves in a circles of the same difference

Just hours after a group of not-particularly-popular-or-influential South Sudanese politicians announced that they have defected, supporters and tribesmen belonging to SPLA-Juba and SPLA-IO have come out separately to praise the defectors and welcome them into the mucky political arena that is already filled with self-proclaimed messiahs of South Sudan.

Although the defectors have not clearly spelled out who they are defecting from or which side they used to belong to, their press statement distributed in the internet vaguely accuses a leader of murdering civilians; commanding an out of control bunch of tribal militias; and being passive to the suffering of the people of South Sudan. Supporters of President Kiir, leader of the…

What do you mean by “harm”?

Bondings 2.0

Archbishop John Baptist Odama

Amid reports that six LGBT people were stoned to death in Uganda last week, Archbishop John Baptist Odama is calling on his fellow Ugandans to respect the rule of law — and the lives of lesbian and gay people.

Odama, who heads the Uganda Episcopal Conference as well as the Archdiocese of Gulu, is quoted by PinkNews as saying:

” ‘Let us learn to love God’s human creatures…It is not that I am advocating for homosexual practice in the country, but we should not take laws into our hands to harm and hate the homosexuals because we all have weaknesses.’

” ‘The country has been struggling to have a law to criminalises [sic] homosexuality…However, the struggle has been frustrated by the constitutional courts.’

” ‘People should not take the laws into their hands and harm homosexuals, since they are also human beings though with different…
